NPower Gives Technology Innovation Awards to Local Children Services Organization and Low-Income Healthcare Provider

November 13, 2009

WASHINGTON, DC; November 13, 2009 – NPower Greater DC Region and a panel of judges have selected Horton’s Kids and Primary Care Coalition of Montgomery County, MD, Inc. as the winners of the 2009 NPower Greater DC Region Technology Innovation Awards, presented by Accenture. The two winning charities will each receive a full suite of technology services valued up to $35,000, including a strategic technology consulting plan from NPower Greater DC Region, underwritten by Accenture, and free Microsoft software.

This year’s awards were segmented by budget size. With an annual budget of less than $2 million, Horton’s Kids is being recognized for an extensively customized Salesforce database to manage and view profiles of their children’s medical, family and academic history. With an annual budget of more than $2 million, Primary Care Coalition of Montgomery County is being recognized for developing an open-source, web-based IT infrastructure to facilitate systems integration across independent healthcare entities.

“Horton’s Kids and Primary Care Coalition of Montgomery County are organizations that exemplify how nonprofits creatively use technology to better fulfill their missions and dramatically increase their impact. We are proud to recognize these resourceful organizations with this award,” said Lisa Mitnick, senior executive at Accenture and chair of the judging panel.

The judges also chose a runner-up in each budget category. With an annual budget of less than $2 million, National Association of Free Clinics was recognized for FreeClinicLink™, a medical-relief program that uses an online shopping network to provide member’s access to a wide selection of donated and discounted medical supplies. With an annual budget of more than $2 million, the United Nations Foundation: Technology Partnership with the Vodafone Foundation was recognized for the development and delivery of EpiSurveyor - a free, open source data-gathering software tool that can operate on PDAs and any Java-enabled cell phone to access health information in the most remote and resource poor environments.

“We’re thrilled with the caliber of this year’s winners – we have a lot to learn from these nonprofits. Every year the judges are continually impressed with how much these organizations are able to achieve with so few resources,” said Julie Chapman, President of NPower Greater DC Region.

NPower Greater DC Region and Accenture teamed in 2005 to start the Technology Innovation Awards to honor nonprofits that are using technology in innovative ways, to inspire more nonprofits to use technology to achieve their missions and to encourage more corporations and foundations to invest in building the technological capacity of nonprofits.

This year’s judges were technology executives at leading companies and nonprofits including Accenture, AES, Beers & Cutler, Capital One, Clark Construction, Constellation Energy, Coventry Healthcare, Corporate Executive Board, Fannie Mae, Ford Foundation, Marriott, United Health Group, Oracle, Pepco, TerreStar, The Carlyle Group, W.R. Grace & Co., Washington Business Journal, Peace X Peace, Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, XM/Sirius Satellite Radio and XO Communications.
